Viña Mendoza has its name to the Mendoza family name and is located in Chile in the west side of the Andes Cordillera close to the town of San Felipe, in El Almendral within the Aconcagua Valley. The name Mendoza is very old and comes from the Basque area of northern Spain, derived from the old lords of Llodio, descendants, in turn, from the sovereign lords of Vizcaya from Celtic origin. The surname had its primitive solar house in Llodio and later extended to other zones of the Iberian Peninsula. Etymologically the surname is the name of an Alava municipality. Mendoza derives from the Basque Mendotza: compound word (mendi + hotza) which literally means “cold mountain”. After being for a long time in Chile the Mendoza family settled in the Aconcagua Valley in the first half of the 19th century.
